My Story
That Cookie Changed Everything

I Believe We Are Not Entitled to Time.
Life has taught me that lesson more than once.
Because we are not entitled to time, I believe it is essential to align our hearts, truths, and energy to create meaningful and comprehensive success in all areas of our lives. I believe peace is not something we find someday—it is something we choose, practice, and cultivate in each moment for ourselves, the people around us, and the world as a whole.
At the heart of everything I do is a simple philosophy:
When our lives touch, my goal is for both of our lives to be better as a result.
That belief became the foundation for my work, my books, my speaking, my advocacy, Best Ever You, Food Allergy Zone, and The Percolate Peace Project.
But I didn't learn it from success.
I learned it from life.
And, surprisingly, from a chocolate chip cookie.
After developing severe life-threatening food allergies as an adult, I experienced multiple episodes of anaphylaxis and was resuscitated twice.
One of those medical emergencies occurred on June 5, 1999.
I was six months pregnant with my son Cameron.
After unknowingly eating a chocolate chip cookie containing walnuts, I went into near-fatal anaphylactic shock. In that moment, nothing else mattered except surviving and protecting my unborn child.
Thankfully, we both survived.
But I was never quite the same.
That experience changed the way I viewed life. It deepened my gratitude, strengthened my sense of purpose, and taught me that tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Then, in 2004, my father suffered a life-altering stroke. Watching him navigate recovery reinforced many of the same lessons in a different way. I witnessed firsthand the power of resilience, compassion, gratitude, and community, and was reminded once again that none of us knows how much time we have—which makes how we choose to spend our time incredibly important.
During his rehabilitation, he shared a remarkable series of inspirational words in speech therapy that would later become the foundation for Percolate: Let Your Best Self Filter Through. What began as his recovery journey helped inspire a body of work dedicated to helping others navigate change, discover their best selves, and live with greater purpose, gratitude, success, and peace.
That cookie changed everything.
It changed the way I looked at life. It changed the way I looked at gratitude. It changed the way I looked at purpose. It reminded me that tomorrow is never guaranteed and that every day is an opportunity to make a difference.
My husband, Peter, and our four sons are my greatest blessings and my greatest teachers. Together, they have helped shape my understanding of what truly matters. They remind me every day that meaningful and comprehensive success is about much more than accomplishments, titles, awards, or recognition.
Success is about relationships.
It is about family.
It is about contribution.
It is about gratitude.
It is about service.
It is about the lives we touch and the legacy we leave behind.
Early in my college years, I also made a conscious decision to stop drinking alcohol. After a frightening experience that could have ended very differently, I chose a path of intentional living and have remained alcohol- and substance-free ever since. I deeply respect and support those who are choosing lives of healing, growth, and transformation.
These experiences inspired me to create Best Ever You, found Food Allergy Zone, write books about change, success, gratitude, and peace, host The Best Ever You Show, and co-found The Percolate Peace Project.
They also inspired something unexpected.
Chocolate chip cookies.
What began as a tragedy became a symbol.
A symbol of inclusion.
A symbol of kindness.
A symbol of resilience.
A symbol of gratitude.
A symbol of peace.
Since 1998, my family and I have baked and donated thousands upon thousands of nut-free chocolate chip cookies to children, families, schools, charities, organizations, and communities across the United States. What started as a simple act of kindness grew into a mission of helping people feel safe, included, valued, and celebrated.
Because everyone deserves a seat at the table.
I often say that success is a lot like baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
It requires the right ingredients.
Patience.
Consistency.
Care.
A willingness to learn from mistakes.
And a willingness to share what you've created with others.
True success is built on a foundation of world-class excellence, gratitude, service, and heart.
Today, whether I am writing a book, delivering a keynote, coaching a client, recording a podcast, advocating for food allergy awareness, creating a Peace Promise, or sharing a homemade cookie, my mission remains the same:
To help people navigate change, achieve meaningful and comprehensive success, cultivate lasting peace, and become the best version of themselves.
I believe peace begins within.
I believe gratitude changes everything.
I believe small acts of kindness matter.
I believe everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, valued, and included.
And I believe that when we align our hearts, truths, and energy, we create lives filled with greater purpose, possibility, joy, and peace.
Most of all, I believe that when our lives touch, both of our lives should be better because of it.
Because when you grow, the world grows with you.
