People often laugh when I tell them one of my dreams is to be on Sesame Street with Cookie Monster.
Honestly, I laugh a little too.
At first glance, it sounds like a quirky childhood dream that somehow followed me into adulthood. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that my dream isn't really about Cookie Monster at all.
It's about what he represents.
Joy.
Kindness.
Inclusion.
Learning.
Connection.
And, of course, cookies.
As someone who lives with multiple life-threatening food allergies, cookies have played a surprisingly important role in my life.
On June 5, 1999, while six months pregnant with my son Cameron, I unknowingly ate a chocolate chip cookie containing walnuts and experienced near-fatal anaphylactic shock. I was resuscitated and survived and we were ok after spending ten days in the hospital, but that moment changed me forever.
That cookie changed everything.
It transformed the way I looked at life, gratitude, purpose, and advocacy. It led me to become a spokesperson for food allergy awareness, create Food Allergy Zone, write children's books about food allergies, and spend decades helping families navigate life with confidence and hope.
Ironically, the very thing that nearly took our lives became a symbol of some of the most meaningful work I have ever done.
For years, my family and I have baked and donated nut-free chocolate chip cookies to children, schools, charities, family members of hospitalized patients, organizations, and communities across the United States. What started as a simple act of kindness became a mission of inclusion, because everyone deserves a seat at the table.
That is why Sesame Street matters to me.
Sesame Street has always been about helping children understand one another. It teaches kindness, compassion, empathy, friendship, acceptance, and belonging. It reminds us that our differences are not something to fear, but rather they are something to understand and celebrate.
If I ever had the opportunity to sit beside Cookie Monster, I wouldn't want to talk about myself.
I would want to talk about the children living with food allergies.
I would want children to learn that food allergies are real, that kindness matters, and that making sure everyone feels included can be as simple as asking a question before sharing a snack.
I can imagine Cookie Monster saying, "Me love cookies!"
And I would say, "Me too, Cookie Monster. But let's make sure everyone can enjoy being part of the fun safely."
What a wonderful lesson that would be.
Not just about food allergies.
About inclusion.
About making room for everyone.
About making sure no child feels left out.
At the heart of my work is a simple belief:
When our lives touch, my goal is for both of our lives to be better as a result.
I believe that applies to children, adults, communities, and yes—even furry blue monsters.
So if you ever see me on Sesame Street with Cookie Monster someday, you'll know something important:
It was never really about the cookie.
It was always about making sure everyone has a seat at the table.
And that is a dream worth pursuing.
Pause. Breathe. Choose.
Because when you grow, the world grows with you.
Helping every child feel safe, included, valued, and celebrated. 🍪💙
